With so many kid's tv shows of yesteryear being retooled by studios, into films, it would be great if they were somehow improved upon. One could make the case that "SPIDERMAN," "TRANSFORMERS," and a few others were, but many more are just bad. "UNDERDOG" is painfully inferior to the cartoon series it's so loosely derived from. To begin with, none of the magic of the series is here. The main character, voiced by Jason Lee, doesn't have the charisma or attitude to make him endearing or slightly funny. The dialogue is mediocre at best, and there's probably little Lee could do with what's given to him here.
The narrative explaining as to how "UNDERDOG" came into being is also totally uninspired. Perhaps the worst aspect of the film lies in the fact that it's hard for adults to sit through, although they 7 year olds watching it, seemed to enjoy it.
BUENA VISTA has provided the correct 2.35:1 aspect for this 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 blu-ray. It's a terrific transfer! Colors are vibrant in every scene and the level of detail ranks this with the best blu-rays out there. Contrast is flawless, with some of the deepest blacks and grays possible. There are very few moments wherein the image doesn't have the "pop off the screen" type of effect.
BUENA VISTA has provided a PCM 5.1 mix for this release. It's fantastic! A lot of attention has been paid to giving this mix a fully engulfing atmosphere. All speakers are used creatively when "UNDERDOG" is whooshing through the air, but even more noticeably, in slightly quieter instances, wherein ambient effects can be more impressive. Bass, music and other effects are often pronounced, but well balanced.
All of the extras found on the dvd have been carried over, only now in HD, including deleted scenes.
