Under Suspicion (1992) (DVD)

COLUMBIA TRISTAR has pulled a gem from their vaults again with their dvd release of “UNDER SUSPICION”.  Liam Neeson and Laura San Giacomo star in this intelligent, period thriller.  In London, during the ‘50s, divorce is only permitted with proof of adultery, Former cop, Tony Aaron, is now a private investigator and has come up with a profitable way to circumvent the system for those seeking and willing to pay for divorce.  For interested clients, he agrees to have his wife pretend to be having an affair with the interested party, which Tony busts in on, shooting pictures for proof of adultery.  His investigation and evidence is then used in courts, and presumably enough to merit a divorce.

Things go awry when his most recent case is found murdered, causing the investigation to consider him a prime suspect.  As the mystery deepens, we find that the victim’s wife and mistress are both fighting for his large estate, demonstrating more than enough reason to have been involved in his murder.  Complicating things further, Tony becomes involved with the mistress, as enough twists and turns take hold, making the viewer suspicious of everyone, until the ultimate, “big” twist at the film’s conclusion. It’s as disturbing and surprising an ending as any we’ve seen, and helps make “UNDER SUSPICION” one of the better thrillers we’ve seen in a long time.

COLUMBIA TRISTAR has preserved the film’s 2.35:1 aspect ratio, with 16:9 enhancement.  The production design to the film is complimented by the terrific detail here, but, unfortunately, there is a problem with shimmering throughout the film.  Contrast is fine, offering adequate, but not superior detail, in darker scenes. Fleshtones appear natural.

COLUMBIA TRISTAR has presented a Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround mix. The score is a bit heavy-handed, but well complimented here.  Surrounds are used sparingly but effectively. Dialogue is always intelligible and free from distortion.
