Praised by numerous critics as one of the best films of 2004, "UNDERTOW" is now available on dvd from MGM. It deserves the praise it's gotten! It starts off in a weird, almost quirky manner, but soon becomes a great dramatic thriller. Dermot Mulroney is sensational as the father of two, just barely managing to provide food and shelter for his family, living in a broken down home in the middle of a rural Georgia farm. Things become dramatically intense after his brother (Josh Lucas) pays an unexpected visit after getting out of prison. We soon find out there's money Lucas is after, and he has no problem killing to get it.
The film moves at a slow, deliberate pace, but is never dull. By midway through, it's hair-raising! The acting is great and the narrative is unpredictable and moving.
MGM has preserved the film's 1.85:1 aspect ratio with 16:9 enhancement. The image is solid, although colors tend to be restrained. Some minor pixelization appears in a few instances, but doesn't detract from the overall transfer quality. Fleshtones appear natural.
MGM has provided a Dolby Digital 5.1 mix. Surround effects are virtually non-existent. Almost the entire film is focused towards the center-channel, however, this still doesn't diminish the film's overall power. Dialogue is always intelligible and free from distortion.
MGM has provided some great extras, including a trailer, lengthy featurette, and audio commentary.
