There was a time when Director Walter Hill was as well known and promising as any of the biggest directors today. His "Southern Comfort," wasn't a box-office success, but introduced audiences to Powers Boothe, and was also one of the few innovative suspense/drama films of its year. "STREETS OF FIRE," another box-office bomb, actually deserved to be a hit, and Diane Lane has never looked as beautiful as she did in that film. Most of Hill's films deserved better success. "He coulda been a contender!"
His newest film, "UNDISPUTED", opened and closed almost immediately during its theatrical run, in spite of some good reviews. While not a great film, it's highly entertaining.
Wesley Snipes plays Monroe, a convict whom also happens to be the prison's best boxer, maintaining the "Sweetwater" prison Heavyweight title. When World Heavyweight Champion of the World, Iceman Chambers(Ving Rhames) is sent to the prison, it's not long before a match is put together for both of them. Peter Falk, as an aging gangster, has a lot to win in his betting of the fight, and he's actually quite good in his role here. Hill uses tight editing, stunning camerawork, and captions to immediately involve the audience. And, we learn a great deal of information from his creative techniques as well. The past criminal records of both the stars and supporting players are revealed, and basically, "everyone" deserves to be in prison!
Still, it doesn't take away the urge to root for Snipes(he's the lease offensive of the two) and it's highly entertaining.
BUENA VISTA has presented the film with its correct 2.35:1 aspect ratio and 16:9 enhancement. The image is "DEMONSTRATION QUALITY!" There isn't one flaw, anywhere, that we could detect. The colors are rock solid, and there's no artifacting or grain. Fleshtones are perfect. Contrast is also flawless!
The Dolby Digital 5.1 soundmix, appropriately, packs a punch! The mix is aggressive, and surround/directional effects are virtually non-stop! A great soundmix!
BUENA VISTA has included some brief conversations with Rhames and Snipes. There are several trailers included, but the best is definitely for "GANGS OF NEW YORK!"
