"WALT: THE MAN BEHIND THE MYTH,” a superb documentary about the master
animator, has been released on dvd from BUENA VISTA.
The film is a compilation of interviews with Disney’s family, animators and
talent from some of the more memorable films from the studio. All of these
people help shed light on the man and give a real depth to him that has never
been well depicted before now.
While we learn more than previously known about Disney’s younger years, we also
learn a great deal about how he achieved the success he did in creating his
studio.
While some of the interviews are less interesting than others, overall there’s a
great sense of accomplishment and pride displayed that everyone should
appreciate. There’s also a great sense of nostalgia and a work ethic that’s
been all too easily dismissed in recent years.
BUENA VISTA has released this title with the correct 1.66:1 aspect ratio, but
without 16:9 enhancement. While some footage appears with muted colors, much of
it looks fine. Color values are decent, and even without great contrast, the
overall image is still pleasing.
BUENA VISTA has included a stereo mix, offering no directional effects. Still,
the dialogue is intelligible throughout and there’s no distortion anywhere.
BUENA VISTA has also included several supplementary features. “WALT: AN
INTIMATE VIEW”, is a half-hour featurette offering even more interviews and
studio vault-type footage.
“MAKING OF WALT: THE MAN BEHIND THE MYTH” is a brief featurette about the actual
documentary. In it, we hear from some of the documentary filmmakers, as well as
some celebrities.
"Disney Legends" features even more interviews, but from some of the studio’s
master animators. This segment isn’t too interesting, however it does offer
some great footage from Disney’s home movies.
