Perhaps due to such incredible films blending drama with lyrical martial arts scenes like "CURSE OF THE GOLDEN FLOWER," it's hard not to dismiss films like "WARRIORS OF HEAVEN AND EARTH" as second rate. The basic plot to "WARRIORS OF HEAVEN AND EARTH," revolving around two excellent swordsmen and adversaries, has great potential. But, mediocre sets, costumes and writing, make the film come across as a "B" movie. There are a few great moments within the film and the siege of the castle is fantastic. It's just too bad that the majority of the film can't achieve that momentum. It feels much, much longer than its 2 hour running time.
SONY has provided a 1080p/MPEG-2 transfer with 2.35:1 aspect ratio. It's a fantastic transfer, so whatever fans of the film are out there, they'll be extremely pleased with the image. Colors are consistently lush and blacks are deep, providing incredible detail in virtually every scene. Even during fast paced movement, there are no artifacts to be found!
SONY has provided two PCM 5.1 mixes. One in the Mandarin Chinese language and one in English with dubbing. While both offer an aggressive soundstage, effects are often bombastic to the point of lacking any sense of realism, much like the film itself. Every effect is pushed to the extreme, and the lack of subtle ambient effects is disappointing, and the film's atmosphere less realistic.
SONY has provided the same short documentary and music video from the standard dvd.
