One of John Huston’s best and most overlooked films, “WE WERE STRANGERS”, has been released for new audiences to discover on dvd from COLUMBIA TRISTAR.  Ahead of its time and politically controversial, John Garfield stars as a socially conscious American expatriate working with the people’s revolution to overthrow a very corrupt government. The always beautiful Jennifer Jones stars as a Cuban joining up with the revolutionaries, wanting vengeance after her brother has been killed by government authorities.

Huston’s superb direction keeps the film constantly tense, while never losing its moral compass. Jones has arguably given some borderline “camp” performances, but not here! She’s terrific and completely believable in every scene.

COLUMBIA TRISAR has presented the film in its correct 1.33:1 aspect ratio. The black&white cinematography is crisp and well complimented here. This 1949 film has fared well over the years and there are minimal signs of aging. The detail is excellent.

COLUMBIA TRISTAR has presented a mono soundmix. Dialogue is always intelligible and free from distortion.
