Eastwood’s most enjoyable action films, “WHERE EAGLES DARE” has finally been
released on dvd. The plot has Eastwood, Richard Burton and other secret agents
attempting to rescue a general from a castle, used as a Nazi fortress, far up in
Starring Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood, “WHERE EAGLES DARE” is a thoroughly entertaining film, varying from being a great drama to being a great action flick. Still, it’s not without its faults, some of which are hilarious! As Eastwood and Burton infiltrate their target, posing as Nazis, the audience is supposed to believe they’re speaking German, even when all we hear is English. This scene and others like it don’t work, but they’re fun all the same.
WARNER BROS. has surprisingly not put much effort into this presentation. The source material appears dirty and with scratches in many places. Colors are generally solid. Contrast is fine, with good detail in even the darkest scenes. There are some artifacts.
WARNER BROS. has presented a Dolby Digital 5.1 mix. Fidelity is limited, but there are plenty of surround effects, greatly enhancing the action scenes. Dialogue is always intelligible and free from distortion.
A featurette, originally made in 1968, “ON LOCATION”, is included. It’s great, and offers behind-the-scenes footage and interviews. The film’s theatrical trailer is included.
