A film that combines the best elements of "The Excorcist" and "Chinatown",  "Angel Heart", has finally gotten the letterboxed treatment.  While it's disappointing that the unrated version isn't offered, the extra footage is in terms of seconds, and not readily noticeable.  The picture quality to this transfer is superior to the earlier full frame version with sharper colors and contrast.  The Dolby Surround sound also appears to have been boosted in quality.

Billy Bob Thornton and Rebecca De Mornay star in Alex Cox's latest film, "The Winner".  Like most of Cox's films, it's both compelling and frustrating to watch. Cox takes cliched characters and makes the story of  a naive "winner" in Vegas and those out to use him, unpredictable and often entertaining.  Unfortuanately, Cox also likes to turn story structure on its head, and  may leave audiences confused at the end, it did so to this reviewer!  The performances are worthwhile, Rebecca DeMornay is both her sexy and believable as a showgirl in debt. Vincent D'Onofrio is also quite impressive.

The full-frame presentation doesn't appear to be compromised in any way.  Nothing appears to be taking place outside of the 1.33:1 framing.  The various lighting techniques throughout the film are complimented with fine color and contrast. The dolby surround sound  is a little disappointing with minimal separation. Another complaint, Live Entertainment seems to have a problem with chapter indexes. Almost every studio takes the effort to provide this benefit to the viewer, join the party!
